Finding Stocks

Now that we've identified the three key approaches, let's take a look at how you can use theScreener.com to access the stocks for each.

The Stock Screener
By clicking on the tab "Stocks" on the homepage, you will enter the Stock Screener. The fields provided in the Screener enable you to quickly define (and refine) your search. Depending on the complexity of your own search demands, the screener can be used either in Standard or Advanced mode.

The Stock Screener: Profile Management
If you would like to avoid repeatedly having to make the same selections, you can save searches by using the Profile Management function. This function is found at the bottom of both screeners. If you save a search profile under the Standard screening function that profile will only apply to the Standard screening function. The same holds true for saving profiles under the Advanced screening function.

Index Investing with theScreener.com:
the best way to find stocks for this approach is to use the Stock Screener. Once you are in the Screener, select the index you would like to invest in, then, using the Interest field, select Very Strong or Strong. Click on Display results. When the list of stocks appears, click on the small triangle in the top left corner of the "Mkt Cap in $bn" column to arrange this list by largest to smallest in Market Capitalization. Now, with the largest capitalized stocks at the top of the list, you are ready to begin your selection analysis.

Asset Allocation with theScreener.com:
open up the Stock Screener and select the market or currency in which you would like to invest. Then, where it says Database, instead of "All Stocks", select "Asset Allocation List (AAL)". Click on Display results. If there are no results it might be a good idea to wait until the next update and check again.

Timing / Trading Opportunity Investing with theScreener.com:
each time you log on to theScreener.com you will find the New Trading Opportunities conveniently listed right at the top of your homepage. To review them simply click on the words New Trading Opportunities to the right of the number.

To see the stocks that have changed from New Trading Opportunities and Open Positions to closed positions since the last update, all you have to do is click on the words Take Profit / Stop found at the right of the number. This list will include the stocks that were previously New Trading Opportunities and Open Positions but because their prices have fallen below their Take Profit / Stop limits have been closed out by theScreener.com.

Depending on the market you have selected and the climate of the stock market in general, you may find that you often have no New Trading Opportunities. This is normal, since trading opportunities are based on timing and timing doesn't always accommodate the market.

We would like to emphasize that just because theScreener.com signals trading opportunities and provides stop limits it is not a magic formula guaranteed to generate profitable trades each time. Our New Trading Opportunities are merely signals that suggest: "with this stock, at this price, under current conditions, there may be an opportunity to make a trade", and they should be treated appropriately. Using timing can certainly lead to very profitable trades, but keep in mind that the "risk / reward" rule holds especially true here. Remember, since you are dealing with a short time-horizon combined with a timing approach, you should be particularly vigilant when trading these stocks.

Trading Opportunities and Very Strong/Strong Interest stock lists
As mentioned previously, each time you log on to theScreener.com you will find, highlighted at the top of your homepage, all of the New Trading Opportunities in your selected markets. What you will also find are all the four and three star stocks found in your selected markets. To view these stocks all you have to do is click on the words Very Strong Interest or Strong Interest to the right of the numbers and stars.

The World Map
Every market and index covered by theScreener.com will appear on your homepage, however only the ones in your subscription will be "active". If you click on the country name, you will receive a list of all of the stocks covered by theScreener.com in that country. If you click on the index name, only the stocks in that index covered by theScreener.com will appear.

The Stock Search Engine
In the top left corner of the homepage you will find the stock search engine. Using this function you can enter a single stock, or a list of stocks (as long as they are each separated by a space), then select the search mode, Symbol(s), Company Name, ISIN code(s) and click on the GO button. If you enter a single stock, then you will be taken directly to that stock's Chart View. If you enter a list of stocks, you must select only one search mode (i.e., Symbol(s)). Once you press GO the list will appear in Standard View.

The importance of using the glossary
Once you've called up your lists you can view them by using either the Standard or Advance View functions and arrange them by clicking on the small triangles found in the top left corner of the columns. By clicking on the yellow question marks in the top right corner of the columns, a screen will pop up containing the alphabetized glossary of theScreener.com's terms. This glossary is a valuable tool for understanding the depth of the analysis available to you. The better acquainted you are with the glossary, the more you will benefit from the analysis provided by theScreener.com.
